ST&G's John Shaffer Named to National Bankruptcy Conference

October 27, 2005

K. John Shaffer, a senior partner at ST&G, has been admitted as a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, a prestigious group of the nation’s foremost bankruptcy experts.  Limited to about 65 active members nationwide, the Conference is comprised of a select group of attorneys, judges, and law professors who have achieved distinction in the field of bankruptcy law.

Formed in the 1940s by scholars who had helped Congress in the first comprehensive revision of the 1898 Bankruptcy Act, the National Bankruptcy Conference was a major consultant to Congress in the overhaul of the Act in the 1970s, as well as in the 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act. Only nine of the Conference’s members practice in Los Angeles, and four of them are with Stutman, Treister & Glatt.  They are George M. Treister, Robert A. Greenfield, Isaac M. Pachulski, and Mr. Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer has had significant experience representing debtors and unsecured creditors, including in Owens-Corning, Kaiser Aluminum, and Mariner Post Acute Network.  He is a member of the Federal Judicial Conference's Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules and the Financial Lawyers Conference, and he has served as a Director of both the California and Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forums.

Prior to joining ST&G, Mr. Shaffer served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and to Ninth Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski.  Mr. Shaffer attended Stanford University and the Boalt Hall School of Law, where he served as an editor of the California Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif.
