ST&G's John Shaffer Named to Ninth Circuit Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules

March 6, 2006

K. John Shaffer, a senior shareholder at ST&G, has been appointed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules.  The Advisory Committee consists of leading appellate lawyers and academics from the nine states that comprise the nation's largest federal appellate court.  In inviting Mr. Shaffer to join the Advisory Committee, the Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit, Mary Schroeder, wrote that Mr. Shaffer's "experience as an appellate lawyer will bring valuable insight to the work of the committee."

Mr. Shaffer has had significant experience representing debtors and unsecured creditors, including in Owens-Corning, Kaiser Aluminum, and Mariner Post Acute Network.  He is a member of the Federal Judicial Conference's Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules and the Financial Lawyers Conference, and he has served as a Director of both the California and Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forums.

Prior to joining ST&G, Mr. Shaffer served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and to Ninth Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski.  Mr. Shaffer attended Stanford University and the Boalt Hall School of Law, where he served as an editor of the California Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif.
